I like what you are saying.... as in "Restrict region of use". This could force the user to log the unit into the internet, and make changes in order to work, under many circumstances.
This log in could even be done with MI FI, and a cell phone. A specific and hidden log in would work.

Could be a rolling OAF like you have when you purchased the equipment through JAVAD that has to be renewed through an internet connection once a month, that way it would only be good for a month at most and be a brick after that. You would have a pin number to say punch in from the unit when it is connected to the internet to activate. Just a thought.

there are couple tactics can be used to detect the fact of stolen unit. I would not share it public. Your scenario has an issue that you should constantly enter PIN if unit is not used 1 month, annoying. Pros an Cons in any solutions. I think current FindMe service has more convenient logic for LS.

I have considered attaching the FindMe tags to my units. If something like that that was built in would be great. I can think of RAMS options that might work. Like you I see problems and downsides to all suggestions.

I think 99.87% of all thefts would be done by crackheads or morons that have no idea what the unit is. Once reported stolen, it is essentially a brick to anyone else. Any kind of location pinging or way to find the unit after theft would be handy. I don't know if a siren on the unit that goes off like a car alarm if moved without being stopped would be helpful or not but it seems like a good idea.

I forgot to stop my base once before I put it away. Maybe that would also be a helpful reminder for the user.

Maybe glitter would be a nice touch too. Even if you didn't get the unit back, it would provide some consolation.
