ArWest AW400BT

I have a AW400BT (4watt) radio connected to an Intuicom RTK bridge. The radio gets really hot and I was wondering if this is normal. I ran it today for about 3 hours and when I got back it was so hot that I could not pick it up. It was set to transmit Satel 3AS 4SFK 19,200 25Khz.

The 35 watt radios can get hot when the duty cycle is high and the output power is high. There is a fan kit to cool the radios. There may be a problem with the antenna if your 4 watt radio is getting hot and I think it should be checked with a SWR meter.

It looks like the high gain antenna produces a lot more heat than the rubber ducky. I was able find an old computer heatsink and fan and attached it to the radio and that cools it down nicely.

I tried 2 different high gain antennae, one with a ground plane (Javad) and one without (Laird). Both caused the radio to get hot.
