Do you think the LS runs slower under LINUX?

It could be my perception, (because many things in it run faster, screen regens, stuff like that) but it SEEMS that we lost a good 10-20% of speed, IN THE WOODS, as compared with the windows OS. Now, only thing I know much about it, is it does seem to run a little hotter, (temperature wise), but, what are other's impressions?
Are there any hard numbers, or other opinions?
Thank you,
Nate

I think it runs slower in the woods using Linux, however the leaves grew a lot more during the Linux update. Could be the thicker canopy. Some days it's a beast and others I stand and wait.

I always get my shots though. I have not needed tr@ver$ since I bought my LS. I might have to set a couple points and turn 1 in, but that is few and far between. In fact I didn't use my robot enough the board went bad. Cost me a $1000. Turns out I have to turn it on every couple days so the internal batteries stay charged. I have not used it in weeks. I mostly do rural boundary surveys. if I did ALTA suveys a lot I would probably use it to pop building corners reflecterlessly, etc.

Yes, in my opinion it does not perform in canopy like it did pre-Linux. I've had to use my TS at least once on every survey since the change, up until then, hardly ever used TS. I think mine lost more than just speed...

Nate;
With all the other variables affecting the performance I can't really say if it is performing slower in the woods because of Linux.
the northeast has had a unusually wet year and the trees and leaves are full of water.
When the leaves fall i expect the performance to improve.
Maybe there are ongoing revisions having to do with the RTK engines which are causing this?
Sometimes I am really surprised at how well it performs and other times I wonder myself if something has changed.

This week I've been seeing excellent performance again. Prior to that it did seem to be uncharacteristically sluggish under canopy.

I've seen no slow down in New England, although as Sean notes, we've had constant rain. Speed seems about the same, frankly, post-Windows. But then the LS speed has never bothered me.

I still have one running windows. Last couple weeks really, really slow and tough to get anything under canopy where it usually rocks. I don't think it's an operating system issue. We've had a lot of low, thick cloud cover (but not raining at time of use). I've noticed this will affect performance greatly sometimes.

In my experience, (Topcon Legacy E), when firmware was out of date, it ran poorer. Also, sat. configuration affects all gps equally, (assuming same constellations).
Quite possibly, the seeming lackluster performance, is simply constellation related.
And, I don't know how firmware works.

I don't believe, or see how, the operating system could have anything to do with the LS running slower acquiring fixes. Yes, I too, like Nate saw Topcon and other equipment preform slower after months (if not a year or two) between firmware updates, but that was almost always to do with the tracking and the alignment of the satellites being out of sync - we don't have that problem with the Javad equipment.

What we've been seeing, unfortunately, is just very, very tough conditions with what everyone has described. Low cloud cover, wet leaves, lots of rain, high humidity, etc. all make a considerable difference in RTK performance in canopy.

Time and time again, we've been in a horrible spot or farm and get nothing - decide to call it quits or move to a different part of the job - return the next day and - boom - works like a beast. So many factors go into it working in heavy canopy, it's really impossible most times to put your finger on exactly what is causing it to be slow.

I am definitely as impatient as anyone, but I try and remind myself on these frustrating and difficult spots "well, if the LS can't get this, I'm sure glad I'm not trying to get it with another brand of equipment" ;)

The worst of summer is hopefully over, leaves will be falling soon and when (crosses fingers) Galileo finally gets here, I firmly believe we will see an entirely new world in heavy canopy next summer!
