Finally had time and confidence enough to use the LS for a real project, however am unable to download via the USB thumb drive, tried different thumb drives and also tried taking the micro SD card out and putting it into a reader, it won't read that either. On the LS the data is shown in the project file I created in the Data export routine on the SD card.

It won't read? Can you see any files on the USB thumb drive or micro SD when they are plugged into the PC?

Saved project to SD card then when that would not read (Computer reads all USB sticks fine and reads the SD card from my phone fine) tried inserting USB sticks (several different ones), as per page 268 of the manual, it doesn't show up, then tap the Refresh icon which changes color and then sits there. Several attempts after powering down and powering up the LS it has not changed. All firmware was updated.
