ETA on Linux and Galileo

Last I heard Javad is trying to move the processing for the extra constellations to the Linux system instead of the gnss chip. There is a power struggle when just using the chip processor that has to be worked out.

It's also in the Pre-Release version.

Galileo and Beidou.

The mixture of constellations is still being determined, so you have to determine what signals each engine uses. You are limited to two constellations per engine and only four signals (ie L1 and L2).

I call these "limitations" but I don't think they are really limitations. It will be good, I think, to have each engine specialized to a few specific signals rather than everything going into one pot, so to speak.

I had already upgraded my T1M to use Galileo and I tried the pre release version of the gnss update last week and got my LS with my T1M base tracking and USING Galileo in the solutions - finally!

That being said, and as Shawn mentioned, the pre release version is limited to only two constellations and two signals per engine so you have a LOT - and I do mean A LOT of user choices to make. At this point you actually can’t “add in” ANY Galileo signals to an engine solution already using GPS and Glonass - you can replace GPS or Glonass signals in any particular engine but you cannot use all three constellations in the SAME engine. For instance, you can use a combination of GPS and Glonass in two engines, then GPS and Galileo in two engines and then Glonass and Galileo in two engines.

I honestly found it very confusing and not very useful at this time with so much uncertainty of which signals to use and in what combination. There seemed to me to be a lot of “arguing within itself” going on based on what I saw. I would suggest to anyone to hold off until they actually decide on how they’re going to implement the calculations without being any user input in changing them. Right now, with this much changeability, I was totally confused on weather I was dong more harm than good in getting fixes by my chosen selections.

From my testing Galileo is a very strong signal. I had a Galileo only fix carry me to the end of my observation for about 80 seconds of the total 240 re, This was of course in canopy.

Yes, it seems to be a very strong signal Adam. The setup, as it is in the pre release version, is just WAY too much for us users to “get right” though. Not only setting your “chosen four” signals out of a total of ten possible (3 GPS, 2 Glonass and 5 Galileo), but also changing the corrections and the modulation to handle to new signals.

Like I said, I tried it and immediately went back to release and have decided to wait until it’s “set in stone” what it’s going to be tracking, using and selecting. I’ll leave that up to you guys, Javad and his team!!

The engine selection screen has been simplified so that you choose 2 of 8 constellation options for each engine (J-Field 3.0.2.1102 or greater).

Much better, but as a finished product I’d hope it’s hard wired where there’s no selection process at all for us users. With “choices”, I’ll be afraid in tougher areas I’ll be thinking too much “what if I have this or that selected”. Switching or changing signals could cause more harm than good - for me anyway! I’m too much of a tinkerer.....if you allow me to change things around,I probably will.
