HPT901BT Radio battery

I have only used my new LS a few times so far, but have run short on radio battery twice already. Once was after only using it for an hour or so and today it was dead immediately upon attempting to use.
The "flashing light" does not seem to be a great way to determine if the battery has charge, as I checked it before heading out.
Is there any other way to get a better idea of whether the battery is good?
Can an auxiliary battery be used on this unit?
I have found the radio on and it appears that the power push button on the end can easily be pushed when placing it in a bag or case of storage.

Thanks,

I discovered that the foam liner I made to hold my T2 in a Pelican case allowed the power button to get pressed. (Naturally, I discovered this at a jobsite by finding the receiver with a dead battery.) Some quick work with an Xacto knife to relieve the foam around the button seems to have solved the problem for me.

In a future update we plan to be able to show the radio temperature and voltage in J-Field for externally connected radios. For the time being you must monitor the LED on the radio. Yes it is possible for the radio to get turned on inside a case if you are not careful. Do you have the radio set to broadcast at a 1 Hz rate? Broadcasting at 5 Hz will drain the battery much faster.

An external battery can be connected, you just need to connect a 12 to 34 V power source to SAE plug of the supplied charger. The Battery Kit 1 would work well with it.

According to the manual for this radio the power level light blinks fast when it is "near to full discharge".
That sounds like there is no way to tell the if battery level until it is about to quit.
I look forward to being able to monitor this via J-Field.
I guess the prudent method would be to keep fully charged before use.

Fully charged at 5Hz broadcasting, I was able to get 11.5 hours with the HPT901BT at about 70°F. Broadcasting at 1Hz will improve battery life. Extreme temperatures will affect battery life adversely. I've always just charged overnight, I'm not sure what the charge time is for it.

I can say through a great deal of experience that 20 degree working conditions will significantly decrease your battery life, both electronically, and personally. We cover up, maybe a dark cover for the radio which will be warmed by the sun (if it is available) that does not interfere with the Bluetooth transmissions would help.
