J-Tip Help

I have been trying to use our new J-tip recently and it seems to work well so far. It was overwhelming at first until I set the tone to only make sound after a mag value set to 2.5. It seems like there are a lot of capabilities of the J-Tip as I read through the manual, but it is difficult to understand exactly how these capabilities can be used effectively, such as viewing the various magnetic view screens, when out in the field.

I'm curious if there are any detailed videos showing the J-Tip and its many features in use. If there are no videos like this, I think that creating one would help me more effectively use the J-Tip.

What are others thoughts on the J-Tip and how to maximize its efficiency in the field?

I like to use no tone less than 1.6. Every now and then I will set it to less than that if I'm looking for something deep. I like to use S XYZ for rough searches and D Z for a more precise search. The Jtip sound white box is my preferred method because It allows you to still see the stakeout values.

J-Tip Users...
Is the J-Tip now your sole metal detector or is it simply another tool and the Schonstedt is still in the truck?

Thank you for any replies...

I am not all the way sorted out with Jtip. How I use Jtip, is I turn it on, Hang it on a stick, (I made a little device, so I can cut a stick, and attach it quick) Then, hold it out, and hit CLEAR on the LS. then, I use it. It is complex enough to make a 1000legs.jpg need a computer, to keep his legs working together! We could use a QUICK guide to make it "work like a shonstedt".
Thanks.

I know it's tricky to get it calibrated. How often is it recommended to re-calibrate? Or is it just a one-time thing?

Something I'd like to see is pop-up reminders to calibrate the J-tip, compass, levels, etc. I know some are a one-time setup, but others maybe not? I can't remember how often to do what.

Recalibrate compass when it stops pointing North. I test it by looking at the base rover statistics, which gives the direction to the base. I then point the LS at the base to make sure I see the same number (+/- the expected compass error of a few degrees).

Recalibrate the J-Tip when it doesn't show 100 (+/-1 or 2) for the two J-Tip sensors in the J-Tip setup screen when the J-Tip is away from magnetic objects (ignore the first number that shows the LS sensor value).

Tilt sensors rarely need recalibration in my experience. When you have a pole with level bubbles, look at the top center button in the action screen and see if the tilt values are close to 0 when the pole is level (+/-0.2°). If not then calibrate the level offset.

The compass is the most common thing I need to recalibrate. I find that I need to perhaps on a monthly basis. The J-Tip is a little less frequent, perhaps every few months. The tilt almost never.

JTip Users: Do you prefer the JTip mounted to the bottom of your rover rod, or do you keep it on another smaller "wand"??

I like to use mine on one of the Jpod legs. It allows me to search way up in a briar thicket before chopping

I keep it on the rover pole. Less to carry. On a clean site, I can carry the LS with a J-tip and my shovel and have all I need.

Shawn, that's what I am thinking but I was wondering about the durabilty of it being on the bottom end of the pole. Is it 100% waterproof??

It's proved to be very rugged. I've had mine fully submerged numerous times and it keeps on ticking. If I know I'm going to be picking up a lot of topo shots I will switch to the steel point and put the J-Tip in my vest pocket, but I don't coddle it at all. If 20% of my points are boundary and the other 80% are topo, I typically keep the J-Tip on the pole throughout. If I've wrapped up the boundary and I'm just doing topo for the next day or two, then I switch to the steel tip.

I use a Seco rod for my rover rod so if I get a JTip, I would probably follow John Evers route and drill and tap the Seco to accept the JTip. However, many times when I am shooting in a point with the LS, I go to the next search point while I am waiting as long as it's close by. So in that case, I would still need a conventional pin finder. For this reason, I am still on the fence about purchasing. Thoughts about this?

JMT has J-Tip capability. It doesn't seem to be fully operational yet when I tried it but it will extremely handy when it is.

Adam, I didn't realize this. That would completely solve the dilemma mentioned above! Can anyone comment on when the JTip will be fully functional with JMT??
