JMT on iPhone 12 doesn't connect to Triumph2 without cellular service

JMT on iPhone 12 ios 14.6 doesn't connect to Triumph2 without cellular service using the hotspot method or any other method. Using the latest stable FW. Does anyone here know of a way to resolve this issue?

Most of what I do is in remote areas with no cellular service.

Thank you

I don't believe this is an issue with JMT nor the Triumph-2.

I believe this occurs because cellular providers still consider enabling the WiFi Hotspot on a phone to be an "option". In the US, this option is included in most or all plans, but perhaps elsewhere in the world it is a chargeable option. As a result, the carrier requires the phone to check with the cellular network every time the hotspot is turned on to make sure it is part of your plan. If you don't have cellular service, then the phone can't check to see if you have that option enabled.

With Android, you can use a Bluetooth connection between the Triumph-2 and the phone, but there are compatibility issues with Bluetooth between the iPhone and the Triumph-2 leaving you with needing a WiFi connection.

I would perhaps recommend getting an Android tablet (no need for cellular service on the tablet) and connecting it to your Triumph-2 by Bluetooth. When cellular data is available you can connect your Android tablet to the hotspot on your iPhone by WiFi and work as you are now.

JMT will connect to iPhones such as the iPhone 8 via wifi without internet, it's just not working on the iPhone 12 which is what I use. Should not have to be in cell range to operate these type of devices with software/apps.

As I said in another post:
The issue is not with the internet, not using internet. The issue is the wifi radio is not recognizing either to or from the iPhone 12 or the T2, unless there is internet on/using the hotspot method. Seems odd. Why won't it connect??

Neither JMT nor NetBrowser will connect to the T2 on a iPhone 12 via simple wifi radio. Though it functions properly on older iPhones such as iPhone 8. I assume it's a FW issue because my iPhone 12 has no issues connecting to my Trimble unit and other wifi devices without an internet connection.

There must be a way to get it to function properly. It's just a radio signal...

In the example of your Trimble unit and other devices, which one is the host and which is the client.

For the phone to operate as a hotspot (host) the providers require that the phone have internet access to check that the option is available. If it can't check then your phone can't operate as a hotspot. It can still connect to a WiFi host as a client, such as a router, but it can't provide intranet service as a router.

The Triumph-2 can only operate as a client, not as a host, meaning that your phone must be the host for a WiFi connection.

Let's skip the hotspot, not sure you fully understand. As I said JMT works just fine on iPhone 8 without internet & not using the hotspot method. iPhone 12 should as well.

Anyway, is there anyone who has dealt with this issue and has a fix?

Thank you

There was some change that Apple made that doesn’t allow the wifi connection to work with newer iOS devices. @Yuri Noyanov can answer if it may be possible to resolve this issue in the future.

It's not a matter of Apple allowing it or not, it's a change in ios and/or iPhone 12 wifi radio. The problem exists not only with JMT but with some other unassociated apps as well, but not all. The iPhone 12 does connect to the network provided by the device, but times out when connecting (TCP) to its port via Ad-Hoc with the app, though it is visible and connected to the iPhone 12, so it appears to me it's a timing issue. Either slowing and/or extending the timing may get it to connect with the app or addressing the data string in the app to line up with the ios and/or iPhone12. The iPhone 12 does connect TCP via Ad-Hoc with some apps and will read the data.

Let me be clear, the iPhone 12 is capable of connecting TCP to its port via Ad-Hoc with an app, it's just not connecting with JMT and some (not all) other unassociated apps that are out there.

I was wondering if it's possible to extend the connection timing or slowing it in NetView. I tried to extend the timing in the Networking options but nothing changed, it remained at 600.

Thank you
