LS+ internal radio woes

Following this closely, our new T3/LS+ combo has been incredibly disappointing with the internal radio range (maxes out around 2000' if both base and rover are in wide open ideal conditions, but generally 1000' or less). We're looking into upgrading to a 35 Watt, but this seems like even that isn't going to give us the distance we're used to with our 15 year old topcon units... Cell service is not an option.

They are sending me new components to borrow to rule out any of my radio accessories. We will see. I sure hope it is a bad cable or something simple.
I am going back to the same job that I posted pics of earlier on Friday. It will be a good test of things done so far. I will move up to the top of the hill if I can.

Have you tried using the external UHF antenna?

I would suggest the following test for anyone suspecting radio issues. Setup the radio with the antenna being at least 2 meters high. It should be in a location where there is line of sight between the base and rover. https://www.heywhatsthat.com/ can be used to check the profile between the base and rover. First start with D8PSK modulation and capture screenshots of UHF status screen at 100' and at the point where the radio starts to drop out and the link quality (LQ) is at 90%. Do this both with the internal and external antenna of the LS. When using the internal antenna have the antenna (rear of the unit) facing towards the radio. Then stop the base and switch to DQPSK broadcasting GPS & GLONASS only and repeat the test. Then share the screenshots and we should be able to determine if there is an issue.

Also please note that to get the best performance out of the radio, the external UHF antenna needs to be used on both the LS and LS-Plus. The engineering team is also looking into the possibility DQPSK modulation with a 2 second broadcast rate for 4 constellation corrections.

UPDATE: I went back to the problematic job and went up a questionable access road that I had found the first time out and setup at a higher point and was able to get radio at 1 mile with the external antenna. The internal did make it a ways further this time. Still some dirt in the way, but it worked.

My original intent in this posting was to bring attention to the noticeable decrease in the reception of the internal antenna since my LS+ upgrade. It is still an issue.

Why in the world would an upgrade result in a decrease in performance??? I just assume it was not properly tested and the engineers were unaware of this side effect. Does the plastic J-Mate target cause interference? I'm never gonna get one. Can it be removed or is it providing space for something inside?

I just wanted to bring this to light so it can be addressed in the future. Thanks.

The issue is not the plastic J-Mate target. The internal antenna being near the housing of the LS and LS-Plus causes some loss of performance and this is why the external antenna will do better with long distances. Using a modulation with a higher bitrate (D8PSK) will decrease the range of the radio. The internal antenna design was improved in the LS-Plus around the beginning of August I believe. Units that were received before this may have the old antenna design. Units with the old internal antenna can be sent in with a RMA to have it updated to the new design.

Thanks, Matt. It sounds as if this has been a known issue for a little while. How do known issues get relayed to the end users, besides the forums?

Your comment on the old vs new antennas in the LS+ upgrade. Do customers possessing equipment, that need hardware fixes and requiring RMAs, get notified in any capacity directly from Javad?

received my upgraded LS to a LS Plus last week - using with T-1M base and the internal antenna......I lose my radio at 1000' or less in fairly easy conditions - prior to the upgrade 2000-3000' without even thinking about it. Hopefully there is a setting I am missing. I have it hooked up on RAMS - Ken SN 894 - no password needed

Thanx in advance

Try the external antenna on the plus. Also, are you in the USA? For some reason it is on 25kh.

I am - and unsure why - I will try one in the AM, but never have had to use one in the past, prior to the update - thanx for looking

Dear Ken,

In order to investigate the issue we would like to ask for remote session. Please follow the steps below:

1. Connect the Triumph-LS Plus to Internet.
2. Go to Support->Remote Assistance.
3. Select "JAVAD GNSS, INC".
4. Set Password and press Connect.
5. Write in this thread the password and S/N of Triumph-LS Plus.

Notes:
1. Please make sure, that the distance among Тriumph-1M and Triumph-LS Plus is accordingly 2-3 meters.
2. Connect external power to Тriumph-1M and Triumph-LS Plus.

Best regards,
Andrew Zimin

Dear Ken,

We updated Triumph-LS Plus application to release version, changed frequency of internal radio with 440.00000 MHz (the signal reception may be worse on this frequency) to 462.37500 MHz and switched on external anenna. Please connect external radio antenna to Triumph-LS Plus and try field test again. Please let us know about your results.

Best regards,
Andrew Zimin
