LS running hot

Has anyone notice the LS running hot. This is the first time I have noticed it since the Linux migration and also the longest I have run it since migrating. It was almost actually to hot to put my hand on it. I ran it for about 4 hours in the hot sun. Put it in my carrying bag, thought I had cut it off but it was still on in my bag 2 hours later riding in my air conditioned truck. This is not the first time I done that, but it is the first time it has been that hot.

Greg, go to home, system, and customize. Make sure that powerdown on overheat is checked.

Yes, that foam padded carry bag really insulates it well when completely shut off. Been there, done that.
Thanks Adam for the tip on overheat shutdown.

What parts tend to fail, from an overheat condition?

The components are rated for temperatures up to 85 degrees C. The CPU and GNSS chip generate most of the heat inside the unit so they are in danger of becoming damaged once their temperature exceeds 85. You can monitor the temperatures inside the unit by pressing the battery icon or Battery hardware button.

Just curious why in the hell that wasn't the setting by default? Or moreover, why it's even allowed as a choice for the user to make?

This was the default state of my LS (Jfield v3.0.0.193) until now, when I changed it.

Thank you Adam for telling us and most importantly, thank you Greg for asking!

Also, why make the Overheat Message an option (as it too was by default turned off)? Is there a new problem after switching to Linux? I don't recall either of these two messages being existent in Jfield v2 or v1

How about an overheat alarm, that warns us before critical temperatures are reached?
My cell phone does this. Then, if it continues to get hotter, it shuts itself down.

These were options before Linux. I agree with Nate, I would like to see a warning message as the unit heats up and gets close to the top temp, not when the unit reaches the top temp.

This was an option before Linux.

Good to know. I never noticed when this option was introduced, nor when the underlying reason first popped up. Yesterday's tests in the field were the first tests I've done with Jfield 3 and also the first time that I noticed how hot the LS was to touch. Ambient air temps were in the mid 90's F.

Something like this is planned.

The argument was so that the unit wouldn't automatically power off while collecting a point.
The LS probably won't overheat while collecting a point... Because it's on a pole, with adeqiate air flow around it.
But,
It would be more likely to overheat, in a hot car, or with a jacket thrown on it, or put into the padded bag, while still on.
So,
Overheat alarm should be both audio, and visual, and shutdown mechanism should be temperature activated. I'd guess that if there is adequate ventilation, that it normally won't overheat, without some other component failure, causing the overheat condition. If that happens, then we want it to shut down, and to go get repaired, before it catches fire, or melts down.....

These temps from this morning are indoors with the LS obviously being actively charged. After reviewing my earlier data going back to October 2014 (when the a similar format display as today's was introduced), and also looking at that preceding data, today's values generally appear higher.

I just checked my LS and this option wasn't checked. It is now. Would be a shame if somebody forgot to power it down and put it in the bag, in a hot car and it overheated because this option wasn't checked. I can see the argument that somebody may want to turn this option off, but its a very extreme case. the box should be checked by default and maybe very hard to turn off, if an option at all.

Suggestion:
If the argument is you don't want to power down during data collection, enable it as a default, and when it is time, bring up a message: Auto powerdown initiated, delay for 5min? (or whatever). Have the user choose to not power down, that way if there is no interaction is powers down. If it is that critical to get the shot, you can delay for a few minutes.

That's the plan now. Just waiting for implementation.
