Nate's wish 'n want list

Lookey what I found: http://www.screwpegs.com/ They are hardened aluminum. I'd like them out of steel, but place a small kevlar belt, or strap around the tripod leg, and screw it to the ground, with a Lithium ion drill. Securing the base tripod. Yes, I like it! Now, it is much more secure from wind, and folks trying to grab and dash.....

Another thing, that me and Steve looked at yesterday, is we evaluate the sky view at a given site, and decide that 12' high is where the LS needs to be for this shot. So, we set it to a 20" delay, (all settings are set to run like this) and we run the LS up to 12'. Then, we go about getting witness trees, and locating fence, and other relevant stuff. Then, after 3-4 mins, the LS "Gets it" and we are near a loud construction site. So, the LS can FLASH us with the light on the bottom, and it can also make ANY kind of noise we want. We can set it to play Sweet Home Alabama, or a few bars of Beethoven 5ths symphony! And, it can be quite loud.... Enough to get our attention, even while doing other duties.... It can even send a note to the Iphone, if we are within wifi range.... Sitting in the truck, and looking at papers, deeds, or discussing it with the irate neighbor! Anyway, the ability to make alot of noise, or get our attention.
Thanks!
(OK, lets see what else we can CRAM into the LS...)

So, the LS can FLASH us with the light on the bottom

We actually already have this. Turn on Flashlight Alarms in found in the A/V screen:

STATUSBAR-AUDIO-VIDEO_20151115-12.09.23.png

It flashing when epochs are collected and then rapidly for a few seconds when Accept/Reject is displayed. It is planned to repeat the rapid flashes at some frequency (probably 5 seconds) until the point is accepted or rejected.

It can even send a note to the Iphone, if we are within wifi range.

You can actually view and control the LS through your iOS or Android phone with the JAVAD RAMS app while you are in WiFi range:

Thanks ya'all! I'd still like to select any noise that we can find, and place in the unit, via record.... But, we are WAY over in the "Less than necessary" zone! :)

Shawn, I talked this over with Steve just the other day. He said his old HP 71 had a cool feature, for using a total station, called "Stake to Line".
You gave it an inst pt, and backsite.
Then, simply gave it an ANGLE RIGHT, and it would give you back the dist to int. After you set the point, you had the STORE POINT option. He loved it. I wanted it. I eventually got it, in the unit I was using.
This would accomplish nearly the same thing. Of course, the compass is not as accurate, as other means, but that is not going to matter alot, if you are within some 10-15° of 90°, or perpendicular.
It is essentially a B/B int, on the fly.

A few more items. Stake line, by 2 points. As soon as you tell it the 2 points, it gives you the inverse between those 2 points, on the screen, so long as you are staking them. So, as long as you are staking that line, it SHOWS the BRG and DIST of that line. ALSO, you can push one of those little "Swap Points" things, that swaps the 2 points. (Whoever thought of that, was on track!) Now, you can also stake the ENDS of that line, by station and offset.
Once again, I am a surveyor. The things I think of, and ask for, will make field work faster.
Stake Point shows the POINT number. That is a GOOD thing.

How would you like a built is scanner, in place of the foreward facing camera?... And an incremental encoder on the LS base?
Go to site. Set stake, for backsite.
Move over 30', set ls up. Point it at backsite stake. Zoom in on top of backsite stake. Ping distance, w/ scanner.
Rotate to foresite. Zoom in. Ping dist to foresite.
Incremental encoder does angle.
We got it!
I'd like it....

Well, it could be set up, backsited, and scan a whole scan, when desired. This could make point clouds, that was the whole area in front of the LS. It also could (as I said above) with a Incremental encoder, (This is what reads an angle for a digital gun) And, via zooming in, it would be a total station. For just a few coords, within view of the ls.
Well, It would work. And, for stakeout, it would also provide an angle and dist, to set the corner. And, by zooming into the target in use, you would have a temporary coord, on the target, with the inverse from the target, to the final point to be staked.

Agreed. But to create that magic I suspect the innards of the LS would have to be transformed. A scanner uses a completely different chipset. I haven't seen the LS interior, but would guess it's pretty full.

Patrick, the LS was the brainchild of many people. It sort of "Evolved". I cannot help but think that it can and will continue. Will it ever become a full blown scanner, and GPS system? I don't know. The only part of scanner that I want, is it to FUNCTION as a Total Station, when desired. ie, internal edm, and angle measuring. However, I sort of think, that it would be easier to go the scanner route.
Dunno.
