OK, Let's Build an LS, how WE WANT it....

Why not collapse the rover pole and put it and the LS in a backpack or J-Pack?

Trying to create a removable front display and button panel would unfortunately cause the unit to be larger, heavier and much more prone to failure of mechanical and electrical connections between the two parts.

Matt,
Placing the LS in a pack works fine when you are not using it to navigate, or stake out line. Removing and replacing the unit from a pack can be frustrating, and time consuming when doing it frequently, and in some of the terrain where we work.
There are times when finding a place to set the pack can be an issue.

I agree that the engineering of a hybrid model would be a challenge.

An alternative to a hybrid model could be a quickly mounted bracket that could be placed directly beneath the antenna that would hold the Victor LS or other controller in a vertical or near vertical orientation.

Perhaps, a quick release mount for the pole connecting to the Triumph LS that would maintain the measured height of the pole, saving wear and tear on the male and female mounting threads. I could then place the unit inside my coat or a padded case using a carrying strap, and place the collapsed pole in a scabbard on my side. This would allow me to check my location quickly and easily as well as allowing me to use both hands for climbing, balance, or using trekking poles. The Javad rods should not be used as trekking poles, but I have been guilty of doing just that on more than one occasion.

I truly appreciate having the display at or near eye level when staking, or collecting data, but I am also concerned with protecting the equipment from damage, and being as efficient and productive as I am able.

Have you seen the bracket for the Victor-LS? It can do this.

Matt,

I have seen this, and it looks well made.
A modification that I believe would be useful for some would be the ability to quickly connect, and disconnect the bracket from the pole mount while leaving the Victor LS in the bracket.

This would reduce the chances of the bracket getting tangled up in vegetation, or bent from an unexpected impact.

On the scanner...
It starts the scan @ 8:00 position, goes clockwise, and ends at 8:00.
This way, you (with bipod), start the scan, and then step left, to the 9:00 position, and you effectively remove yourself from the the scan.

Another solution, one that you might have heard from a Law Enforcement Officer is to "Get face down! On the ground! Now!"

Sorry, I could not resist.

The standard Seco-style quick disconnect that's on my data collector clamp works well. I expect that the Victor clamp could be modified to use one of those without too much redesign work.

I guess you could locite a 1/4" to 5/8" adapter and the go with a 5/8" to 5/8" quick release. Use the loctite you can break loose though.

I'm happy with my 5/8 rig.
I wanted a quick release, for the mono pole. As my tick illnes recedes, i get to use the monopole some.

There are a whole host of 1/4" stuff, for cameras. Quick connects, plates, general stuff.
If you find a very good one, please post it. It should have a good flat surface to maintain strength of connection, with the bottom of the LS.

Related brands are:
Manfroto
Kodehaoda
Any way. Mono pole quick connect is something many of us would use.
Thank you.

I have been contemplating this one.
A 1/4" by 20 female to 5/8" by 11 male adapter topped with a 5/8" to stub adapter mounted on the pole. Loctite, solder, or weld those together.

Then a 5/8" female, and 1/4" male adapter.
This would be screwed into the bottom of the LS.

Then to merge the pole to the LS, use a Leica GAD31. They are about as bombproof an adapter for this type of thing that I have ever seen.
You can screw them tight so the quick release button will not work when trying to remove the unit from the stub. They are not tall like other quick release adapters that I have seen, and they do not wobble.
They are about $120 but it would be worth it
