Old Jobs, Mixed Data & Carlson Coordinate Transformation

Always looking for a way to use my LS and buck-in to an old job to add some additional data to the old coordinate system...here’s a good tool:

A while back I found Carlson’s coordinate transformation routine...pretty slick. It can spit out a least squares fit between an old adjustment, my old work... or basically any two sets of XYZ data for that matter. I’ve been using it as a tool to quickly compare measurements I’m getting from my Javad LS to old projects coordinates collected with all Trimble equipment...and adjusted in TBC.

here’s a screenshot of the residuals of a rigid no scale comparison. These locations were across an 18ac site mixed with full woods, partially wooded, and clear sky site...but you can’t really see any difference across the residuals spread...

This original survey was with VRS. I set multiple triplets of control and punched into the woods with my total station to locate the corners...funky weird long parcel cut off by I-77.

From today’s LS data I can see that the old coordinate system had a 4.7” rotation error...not too shabby... I confirmed that by a very long grid tie to a NCGS monument.
I just found this interesting for anyone doing Javad data comparisons.
...guess we’re doing something right!

Check it out...gotta be tons of uses for this routine...

Localization in J-field accomplishes the same thing. The Carlson transformation tool is a slick way to perform quick comparisons between two survey coordinate sets.

...but this has been in there for a while.
