Post pics of difficult shots

Adam, on that first shot, it looks like you have a fiberglass pole. If you get a piece of PVC, slit one side, and snap it over the rod, it will disperse the crush of the bipod. I had to file mine down, to make it thinner, so the bipod would go over it with the extra mass. But, it works quite well. I have thought of using epoxy, and gluing it on, so that it has more crush resistance. Haven't done it yet. But, it has helped.
Nothing like taking an impossible shot, and repeating it 2x or 3x!!
And they are 0.07' apart!!

Here's a shot that I couldn't believe. The sun barely made it through the branches, but somehow I got a decent scattering of shots. I shoot points like this three times using the Boundary preset, and then cluster-average the results. All 3 shots were super tight. I don't know how it does it, but I'm sure glad it does!

Not so difficult of a shot here but an idea of how easy it is to work with. This is my 12 year old daughter and 15 year old daughter taking pavement shots on a big topo job I'm working on. If she can do it, any surveyor should be able to pick it up and make it work. IMG_0502.JPGIMG_0491.JPG

That's awesome Matt. I haven't been able to take Laney out with me for a while. Thursday she's going with me to a lot survey. That's good times.

A few notes, for those who don't yet own an LS. These difficult shots are for real. They are the PRODUCT of a series of FIXES, with RESETS, Go fixed, RESET. And, they have typically 100-500 epochs of data. Then, MORE resets. So, imagine going to a difficult place, and going fixed for a minute, storing the shot, come back on 15 minutes, repeat. Do this 4-5 times. All the points are within 0.08' with an outlier, at 0.12' away. Use a weighted average, and this is ONE SHOT in the LS. However, it usually completes this task, within 5 mins.
Sometimes, it takes longer. However, the NUMBER ONE GOOD THING is that you can have complete confidence, that you are within the accuracy that it tells you.
This is done with the following settings:
Press start.
It goes through a series of gain fix, and reset. Until it is around 90% sure it has the right location within 0.16'.
Then, it goes to phase 2, where it narrows it down, within the 0.16' to whatever is the best it can do, for that multipath environment.
Then, it goes to phase 3, which is similar to phase one, where it makes SURE it has the right place, within 0.16'. (Think checking the foot each way, of what you called out, when using a tape)
Finally, you are prompted to store the shot.
This is all done for you. You don't have to do it manually, like we used to do, with the TDS Data collector.

Then, if the error ellipse is larger than desired, repeat the observation. Or, if greater confidence is desired, repeat it.
So, often, we find shot 2 is within 0.08' of the first observation. Then, shot three is similar. Then, we use an automated weighted average, to generate the AVERAGE of those 3 observations.
THEN, on top of this, we have a POST PROCESS answer, and often this also agrees, within 0.08 or less.
So, my point is, we have a VERY strong statistical verification of what we are doing, that's automated.
This makes us very happy.
It's what makes a Javad User.

Thank you,

Nate

PS, I spoke with another fellow Javad-ite, and he told me that he dared NOT take a pic, of where he'd been, with his LS, because those who do NOT understand, would not believe him!
HA!

I've basically stopped taking pics too Nate....just doesn't surprise me at all where I consistently get great, verified, reliable, repeatable, etc etc etc shots anymore. The coordinates I'm storing are 100% good - and the LS has the tools, as you describe, to prove it, prove it again, then prove it again....as many times as you want.

I got this one today. I actually started out using the NCGS RTN but the LS was very slow on it. I was in a hurry but ended up going back and starting my base. When I shot with my base it went pretty quick. PPK was a few hunards difference. Love
that distance to last white button!

Not really, this is just a staged photo but it WILL happen around here. 8' Live Oaks are common and 12' specimens are not rare.

I will post when it does. It does work well under our Florida greenery quite well.
For some more of the many shapes Live Oaks take go to may Flikr page, same username.
