Radio contact

Sometimes I will lose radio contact completely. I go back to the base and turn off everything and then turn it back on, and then go back to surveying. What might be the cause of this? I have my radio about 30 feet from the base.....Phil

Grabbing this thread for a general question. Just curious, has anyone ever derived a correlation between radio power settings versus the range in feet.
Assume an open ideal situation. I have a 901 and run it at full power all the time but I have a survey next week that I will be working within an area about 600 feet total. Just got me thinking.

Thanks Shawn, now I have another question, how about radio output power versus power/battery consumption?

Matt Johnson shared this in an old thread:
Battery life can be estimated with the following formula:

(amp hour battery rating)* (battery voltage)/(power consumption in watts) = (expected battery life in hours)

From the spec sheet 38 watts are consumed when broadcasting at a 35 watt output with a 30% duty cycle. I think the 30% duty cycle corresponds to a 1 Hz TX rate so for a 35 watt radio with a 12 volt 40 amp hour battery:

40 Ah * 12V / 38W =
12.6 hours is my best estimate
