Space X and Star link

Here is a new constellation that hopefully we could add to the JAVAD arsenal. Theses same satellites are used for internet connection in remote areas. So we would not need radios or cell phone hot spots if we could use it.

So you turn on the LS and have 326 tracked satellites with a variety of 26.3. Let’s do this!

That could possibly be the next huge leap in GNSS. I’m also hoping they develop a mobile Starlink system that could be used with base/rover over TCP. That would be a game changer for a lot of surveyors.

It's going to be a while before before these broadband constellations are usable for communication without some sort of stationary or vehicle-mounted terminal. Right now, one could plop a Starlink terminal near the base and hook it up via wifi/ethernet. On the rover side, we would need another terminal or the usual cell service to be able to receive data from the base. Unfortunately the terminals need to be stationary so they can align themselves in the proper orientation, so that the phased antenna array can do its work.

I expect that at some point in the future, we'll see integration of antennas into smartphones, at which point we'd have global internet access right in our pocket and radios would become "old tech" for RTK.

Even this early in the development of the system, as Starlink emerges from its Beta phase, folks regularly report between 25-90 ms pings. That's only going to get better and more consistent throughout the coming stages of full deployment.

Supposedly in 2022 it'll even be available for us poor folks in the northern latitudes, once they get more birds into the 70-97 degree inclination orbits... and they'll have SPACE LASERS on them, meaning they'll be able to route packets along optimal SV-to-SV paths for maximum speed and low latency.

Fun fact, there's a shiny new Starlink ground station just a few blocks away from where I live, hooked directly into Quintillion's undersea fiber trunk. I did the civil surveying for the ground station, and was exceptionally excited to be involved in such a revolutionary project, even in a small way (after waiting 5 years, eagerly absorbing every bit of news regarding Starlink development). I fully expect to have world-class minuscule ping times once this bad boy gets fired up :D
