TCP Corrections from Triumph-3 with T-Mobile: What are my options?

Good Evening,

I'm looking to setup TCP corrections between the Triumph-3 and LS+. This is uncharted territory for me. We have a Sprint wifi hotspot we use with the LS+ for RTN corrections. I poked around in the settings and it there's no option to forward ports on it, so I don't think it'll work for us. The hotspot is a few years old and since T-Mobile bought up Sprint the hotspot won't work at all in March. We have to migrate the account over to T-Mobile and in doing so I'm looking to get something setup to use with the T-3, either a mobile hotspot or a sim card. Before we go to the store I'd like some opinions and clarification so I know what I'm asking for.

What we'd like to be able to do is transmit corrections over the internet instead of Radio for instances where we can't reach across a whole site with radio alone. Not all sites are good for internet, not all sites are good for radio, but it'd be nice to have both in the toolbox.

Ideally, I think you'd want a SIM card with an assigned static IP. I don't know if these are available anymore, especially since it wouldn't be a business account. If we just got a plain old SIM card tied to the plan, what are the drawbacks? Would I just have to change update IP address at the LS+ each time we set up?

If we got a hotspot what would be need, one with port forwarding?

I welcome any an all opinions and expertise on this matter. Thank you.

Dylan,
Long story short, you must have a static IP to transmit TCP corrections. I've tried extensively the way you were describing by entering the assinged dynamic IP and it won't do it for whatever reason. At some point JAVAD is releasing a JCORS service that will allow using any internet connection but I think that's a little ways out.

We use Verizon hotspots that have a DMZ setting which forwards traffic to the base IP. I'm not sure how other carriers handle it but there is forwarding involved. We have a business account and it cost us a one-time $500 fee.

I got a Verizon sim card that fits right into the T-3 (they come standard now with a cell modem) because I did not want extraneous gear around. Streamlined is for me. The big problem was reaching someone at Verizon that actually knew what a static IP was and to get it set up correctly. There is a one time fee of $500 and only available through a business account, plus the usual roughly $20 a month line fee. Javad has a Verizon card they will set up for you for $500 a year unless that has changed recently. In my neck of the woods, Verizon has the best coverage.

It sounds like it should work, but if you've already gone down that route without luck I'm going to have to defer to your experience. I didn't even know they were developing JCORS. It sound like it could be amazing, like so many other Javad innovations, but with no ETA I shouldn't bank on it.

It sounds like at a minimum we'd need a business account. I have zero experience with T-Mobile, so at some point I'm going to have a blast trying to reach someone there knowledgeable on the subject.

$500 a year doesn't sound too bad if that's still available. When we had the LS+ built I think there was a $1000 option for Verizon. We didn't get that option, so we might be SOL.

Thanks

If you didn't purchase the option with the system it will cost $1000 for the option plus $500 per year for the sim card from Javad.

Many people spend hours trying to get it set up thru Verizon. After 4 or 5 hours on the phone it ends up costing more in lost billable time

I did the math and went through Verizon and consequently lost literally thousands of dollars of billable time trying to get everything working. I have talked to at least 30 different people in my quest for a static IP and had to change my phone plan over to business plan which cost more. In a few years it will be a cost savings but not so far.

My experience was quite a bit different. I did have to get to a business rep on the phone, and maybe spent 20 minutes going through all the questions and answers, but I didn't have to change my phone plan and I did get a static IP address. Aside from the $500 one-time cost for the static address and the $150-ish one-time cost for the MiFi device, the monthly hit to my phone bill is $5. I have 3 phones and the MiFi on the account, all sharing a monthly data allowance of 12GB.

Same here. The key with Verizon is to ask for Tier 2 support immediately. It took us about 30 minutes on the phone and they set it up. Now for our office base we had to go through ATT and that was nightmare....but still only about an hour of time on the phone.
