Triumph-2 Base Security

I'm starting a new thread to pick up where the "Netview File Transfer Speed" thread left off, as the latter had digressed considerably from the original concept. The photos below show how I modified a T2 so it can be locked to something secure, and the modifications I made to a SECO fixed-height tripod to accommodate a lock.

First, the modified T2. I drilled holes in two of the chassis ribs to permit a 3/32" stainless steel cable to be threaded through and then crimped into a loop:

For the tripod, I drilled a couple of holes through the top and pop-riveted a bracket that I made out of 16-gauge stainless to the underside:

As noted in the other thread, it won't stop a determined thief, but it'll discourage the unit from just "walking away."

Jim,

Your product modification skills are absolutely wonderful. The reason for needing to use them is not.

I have never heard of someones Base being stolen in Ohio.

Even if the crew would forget and leave it overnight, the greatest risk is likely to be from four legged wild animals. Not two.

John I had a 'psychotic' woman (the words of a local attorney who has dealt with her before) take my base station, radio and tripods today. Its a long story but I was working on a survey for an upcoming auction to sell a farm. The owners are elderly and in a nursing home and we were hired by the auctioneer and the trustee of the property to do the survey. There are 3 daughters, apparently the courts appointed a 3rd party trustee to oversee the sale of the farm to pay for the parent's medical expenses. I was unaware of these details at the time, I only knew that we were hired by the auctioneer to do the survey.

So I was probably about 1000' down the road from the base station. I have the base station setup along the driveway of the farm and I notice a van pull in the driveway. A few minutes later I am no longer receiving corrections. Being suspicious I walk to where I can see where I had the base station setup and I see the van right beside that location. It then pulls away and heads the driveway farther and I see my base station is gone. I quickly jump in truck and drive up to where the van is parked beside the house. My equipment is no where to be seen at this point. I see the woman and tell her I am doing the survey for the auction. She says is one of the daughters and claims to not know anything about a survey being done or an upcoming auction. I tell her that I need my equipment back and she says she calling the sheriff. I told her that I was fine with that. The operator tells her she needs to give me equipment back and I end up getting it out of the garage she had put it in. I find it with my radio still broadcasting without the antenna being connected. Lucky it still seems fine and works. It was the 35 watt radio but I only had it broadcasting at 4 watts. I tell her to call her parents and she does. The dad has alzheimer's but tells her the property is being auctioned but he said he didn't know who I was so she still thinks I shouldn't be there. My patience with her was growing pretty thin at this point. She demands to see drivers licence which I showed her. I end up arguing with her for a few more minutes and then take off with all my equipment and go home and contact all the attorneys involved in the estate.
