Triumph LS LCD Update

Gentlemen,

I am having some difficulty updating my LCD firmware.

My understanding is that we remove the SD Card and insert in PC, run the recovery tool downloaded from the LS's webpage, replace the SD Card in the LS and power cycle. Is that correct?

I am using a card reader on my monitor (I have not a reason to read an SD Card on my PC before this issue came up). If the recovery tool indicates that the card preparation is done, does that confirm that the firmware was written to the card.

Hi Jim,

There is no LCD firmware identified on the versions screen. There is however an indication of the LCD hardware. Before you go through with completing a Factory Recovery, could you please explain why are you contemplating this?

Hi Kelly,

Yesterday I received a message on my LS that an LCD firmware update was required. This apparently is not done through the typical upgrade process. If you refer to the LS receiver's web page there is a download drop down box at the top of the page. The last entry is titled "CTPLCD firmware upgrade MicroSD". Clicking that last item will download a zip file with instructions on how to upgrade using the recovery tool.

Apparently we are only to do this if we receive a message on the LS...

Jim,

This is an interesting item and the first time that I've learned of such a notice being given the user by the Triumph-LS. Perhaps there are others here that have been through the process of updating the firmware for the screen and will be more helpful than I.

The URL to the webpage that you mentioned I believe is this:
http://www.javad.com/downloads/javadgnss/support/ctpfirmware/LS_CTPFirmwareUpgradeProcedure.pdf

And for anybody reading this thread, please note:
you dont need to do this unless told.PNG

After reading that document dated February 2, 2015, the user is instructed to:

On your PC running a Windows OS later than Windows XP
create a special and separate bootable microSD card by running the RecoverySD.exe - this is referred to as the "CTP LCD Firmware Upgrade microSD"

In addressing your original first post in this thread,

remove the special microSD card from your PC
with the Triumph-LS off, insert the card into the microSD slot on your Triumph-LS
turn on the Triumph-LS
follow the instructions on the Triumph-LS's screen and when completed,
remove the card and power cycle the Triumph-LS.

******WARNING********

There are 2 sets of instructions for this upgrade.
1. There is a user guide in the zip file that downloads with the recovery tool on the LS page; and
2. There is a firmware upgrade procedure, located on the LS web page under the information pull down menu at the top of the page (this is the procedure that Kelly refers to above).

The user guide that downloads with the recover tool listed in item 1 does not indicate that we should use a new SD Card for the upgrade. I assumed that we could remove the card from the LS for the upgrade. IF THE RECOVERY TOOL IS RUN AND THE FIRMWARE IS PLACED ON THE SD CARD, THEN ALL CONTENTS OTHER THAN THE FIRMWARE WILL BE ERASED. THIS USER GUIDE SHOULD BE UPDATED OR REMOVED IMMEDIATELY.

I save all my data to the SD Card. Luckily I didn't have a USB cable connecting my monitor (where the card reader is located) and PC or I would have lost 6 hours of surveying work I completed yesterday.

Hi Jim,

Yes the recovery tool will erase any existing data on the SD card however the project database files are always stored in the mount volume in the LS, not in the SD card so those files would still be safe. If you save screenshots and GNSS data to the SD card those would have been lost so it is good that you mention this.

Thanks Jim and MJ for mentioning this. The process in making the Recovery Tool for the Triumph-LS is similar as when creating a system recovery disk for your Windows PC in that the bootable disk or system disk being created wants a clean slate (reformatted) to begin from.

I am still unable to run the RecoverySD.exe file. I've tried this on 2 computers and it will not run. I am running Windows 8.1 with all drivers up-to-date. When I try to run the program Windows closes it and sends information. My OS detects the SD Drive.
I've tried "Release", "Pre-Release" and "Tested", with negative results. Any Ideas?

The recovery tool doesn't currently work with Windows 8, this issue is being worked on. Do you have a pc with an older OS you could try?

Well, I spent 12 hrs downgrading one of my computers to Windows 7 only to fine that the recovery tool does not work on it. I thought JAVAD was supposed to be up with technology, yet they can't write a program that is compatible with Windows 7 or 8. I guess I will downgrade Vista to see if it works.

I just had the screen replaced on my LS to the new one last week.
I hope this is not something I have to be concerned about.

Don;
Thanks for the clarification. no lights and warnings.
BTW I have found that quitting JFIELD to windows and then forcing the power off preserves the battery.

Hi Don,

I use win 7 ultimate (64 bit) and the recovery tool works fine.
