Triumph-LS Training

I've been receiving requests for training sessions from licensed land surveyors in MA and ME. because of the geographically diverse nature of New England in general, this becomes a significant consideration for both the teacher and the student if actual face-to-face classroom time and in-person field time type settings are desired. While such workshop venues are certainly something that we can think about, other options including webinars, instructional videos and other online educational opportunities could save us great expense.

As existing Javad customers and licensed professional land surveyors, you are invited into this conversation without regard to the region of the country that you reside, in hopes so that we might garner input addressing what might become (I'm hoping) a core curriculum to Triumph-LS Training.

So this is your chance to begin thinking about structuring a course of instruction. To help get your thinking cap situated, please answer the following questions:
  • Generally speaking, what are your educational goals using Javad GNSS gear?
  • Are there any particular aspects of the Triumph-LS and its operation that you would like to understand?
  • How much time are you willing to commit to such a study?
  • How much money are you willing to commit to such a study?
  • Should an actual classroom-field workshop be necessary, what is the greatest distance that you would be willing to travel?
Please feel free to brainstorm and spitball whatever you like as this is just the first attempt at gauging the need and how best we can meet it.

Hi Kelly,

I could really use hands on training. My prior use of GPS was with Sokkia Locus receivers with Ashtech post processing software.
These single frequency receivers were OK for when they came out. The Sokkia Locus receivers allowed me to tie together various projects and facilitate recovery of control points once the original traverse was destroyed.
On current projects where I need to establish control I rent dual frequency equipment. My vendor handles the post processing. The software I had at that time could only handle single frequency. I recently updated my post-processing software.

I am looking to use these new tools for establishing control points and performing post processing of the GPS data in the office. My questions will be for getting an understanding for time of occupation and logging rate that should be used for this equipment to be as accurate as possible. RTK with localization is also where I am looking to for review. I do not in general use NAD83 or WGS84 or any other datum. 95% of my work is on an existing bearing system with an assumed coor. system. If RTK is to be used localization will be required. I am also interested in Stop and Go with the points being processed in the LS as the work is performed.

This is a good time of the year as field work slows down and I would have excess time. You are only about 4 hours from my location which is not that far to drive.

Looking forward to it.
John

You've indicated that for 95% of your work you aren't using any geodetic datum and that your vendor is providing you with data on an assumed coordinate system from the equipment that you've rented from them. Before going any further, it should be clearly understood that all GNSS equipment requires 100% of the work to be done in the context of a geodetic reference frame before we can begin projecting those points onto whatever surface, assumed or otherwise. J-Field offers a tremendous array of features for doing all of this and Shawn Billings has written an excellent article: Coordinate System Basics, that is included in the Users Guide to the Triumph LS. He has also written the section on Localization. Study those sections and jot down questions as you go. They will help us to determine the types of problems and exercises that we can use to shape a one-day workshop or a curriculum that could be spread out over weeks.

Matt's post should help in answering some of your questions regarding occupation times, but if not please feel free to pepper away with more questions - that's what we're here for! :)

Users guide link is broken will wait for manual. What I was trying to get at is the work that I do most of the time is on a plan bearing system and I wish not to deviate from this system. So localization would be needed on most every job. On large mapping projects when I rent equipment I use Mass State Plane, Mainland with an NAVD88 vertical reference these projects are for a different purpose and are not used for conveyance purposes.

The current size format was chosen to the match the footprint of the box the TRIUMPH-LS comes in. If you are trying to print sections you may want to try legal paper with landscape orientation and 2 pages on each sheet.

I have just received Triumph-LS and Triumph 2 for a trial period. My previous experience is with Topcon Hiper Pro base & rover using a Carlson 600+ data collector with Surv CE. These units were used for static purposes and RTK. Most of my work has to do with land conveyance.

I am interested in getting these units up and running on the basics of the work I perform. I would be interested in learning the more advanced features after learning the basics. Are there any videos or online training that could be helpful in getting me started using these units. Also it would be helpful to get a phone number of a support person I can call as I proceed.

I would also be interested in a 1-2 day workshop and would travel 300-400 miles to site.

Hi Robert, where are you like located? There are several of us (including myself) that take support calls. Our numbers are here. There aren't any online videos yet but we recommend you read the manuals.

Hi Bob,

Keep an eye out for video tutorials coming soon from our PLS teams members. I know of at least three of them have already started on their Camtasia projects utilizing Javad's amazing Remote Access Management Service (RAMS). RAMS is still being tweaked a little bit, but stands ready and quite serviceable. For example, Shawn is working on localizations, John is working on one about leveraging your wifi and local hotspots, and MJ has one he's working on too.

While such videos won't actually be addressing your question if you had explicitly meant hands on training in-person, it will come a very close second and not require you the expense and hassle to fly to your nearest trainer. And while RAMS will be fantastic for such training videos, an other really awesome feature of RAMS is being able to see and interact with a live receiver remotely in real time! More on all of this coming quite soon.

Always and at anytime, please feel free to start a new thread on individual topics that you'd like more instruction on. That's why Javad's support forum is here; your support.

Kelly, I'm sort of reviving this 2014-2015 training-related post. You're in ME, I believe, and I'm in MA.

Any further momentum at your end in trying to offer a New England-oriented training seminar? If so we could consider a joint venture. I have taught dozens of seminars in the last decade (on other topics). Shoot me a PM if you see any possibilities here...

Hello Pat,

I haven't worked for JAVAD since May 2015. So no on any momentum from me towards a New England based seminar for customers.

Kind regards,

Kelly
