Vermont Surveyors

I'm leaving this weekend to Vermont to spend a couple months helping them with a backlog of survey contracts. I'm just curious if there's anyone in that area that does sales/support in case I have the opportunity to demo a unit for the people there, and kind of show off the capabilities of an LS setup.

Aaron I'm happy to set something up if they are interested. Send me an email or call. I think my contact info is in my profile here.

Ok, so I'm out here, only to find out that the previous surveyor was pretty much out of luck if he wanted to do anything on his own. All he had at his disposal was a mechanical total station - no GPS, no robot, etc. It would be a big benefit to this forest - I think - if they could at least to static observations on corners. The hills/mountains kind of prevent RTK radio links, and cell coverage is essentially nonexistent.

What would you all recommend for a bare-bones setup? Something where you could get survey grade positions while spending around 30 minutes at each corner?

Any chance that there's some used or slightly outdated equipment floating around that I could have on loan - just to show off what's possible?

Tryin' t' persuade one o' dem' out o' date surveyors t' upgrade?
You might offer to spend the day doing one of his jobs, with him, on the halves.... But you might need him to charge more...

I'm only about 3.5 hours away. Happy to come over and demo for 1/2 day or so. Figure out a few corners that are suitable and we'll see how it works. I would recommend the setup I have (base rover radio) as it works well for me in very similar area in the Adirondacks.

I know quite a few guys using the triumph 2 with glonass to static in points. They are pretty happy. I don't know why they don't try rtk but whatever floats your boat. USGS does this. You can carry it in your shirt pocket. Again why not RTK with LS? I don't know.

I do that also on remote corners of large tracts. Mile hike with a large ridge in between, no cell coverage, it's the way to go. But I think many still don't realize how much of the total station work can actually be done with confidence using RTK with the LS.

That's the situation I have here. Thanks for the offer to come over for a demo. I'm actually not trying to show the product to anyone, since I'm the only surveyor here and I use/love it already. It would be more of a demo to management to see how a with a minimal investment in equipment, some future person who takes over this role could get so much more done him/herself without having to contract all the field work.

I'm thinking now, I should just have someone back in MN ship me my T2 and do like a 30 minute static on some corners, then send the data in via the web app, that would work as a standalone static receiver, wouldn't it?

Sure, that would work. Still, maybe they would like to see the other possibilities as well. If they're only interested in the T2 you should show them the Android app as well. I use that occasionally and very economical adds to the functionality.

So, the T2 can be used "stand alone"? Can someone give a quick work flow on this process? ( My GPS experience is limited to RTK only...)
Thanks

Simplest way is to have it in your pocket while reconning a site. Find a post and stones, or a pipe, etc. way back in the woods. Just take it out, put it on evidence, power on, hit record button, let sit for 15-20 minutes (maybe longer depending on sky view), turn off. Back in office download to netview and submit to DPOS.
Lots of ways to use it with the App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.javad.javadtools&hl=en_US
Use the App in conjunction with Justin Link for trajectory/stop&go, etc.. http://www.javad.com/jgnss/products/software/justinlink.html

Unfortunately, the people here now won't understand/care what I'm doing with the T2. My thought is to use it as much as I can, and leave a record of the work. The next person who we hire permanently can come in and say "hey, look at how much got done by the last guy with this small investment". It's more like I'm setting up a basis for the next guy's fight to actually buy a bunch of gear.

I would agree with the app though - well worth the money if you're going to be running a standalone T2.

If you had a T2, smartphone, good cell coverage and the app, could you use the T2 as an internet RTN RTK rover?

So it turns out my demo of the T2 alone was a smashing success to the management. They now want me to order a T2 / LS base-rover setup for the next person. Is there someone who will be able to provide hands-on training and phone support? I don't want to go back to MN and have to walk him/her through the learning curve all the time.

Duane, is this you, or is that not your "official" job title?

Aaron, If they purchase through me then I would be their initial support contact. I am "J-Team/Survey sales", but not an employee of JAVAD. In that case I would give a bit of a cost break (because I receive a commission, but doesn't change the cost of the system) on initial hands on training if they want some. I can either order the system for them or you can just put my name in the JAVAD contact person field when you order. On support, if there's something I can't answer for them, then there are 7 dedicated support folks they can call or ask questions on this forum (as well as all the other developer support on this forum). You can email or call me if you want to discuss details. dcfpls@hotmail.com 315-392-2384
