Actual number of channels in the LS?

So I'm confused. Technical specs for the LS notes that it has 864 channels. Somewhere else I read that the actual channels it uses is dependant on the base. The T-2 provides 216, while the T-1M provides 864. I want to get this straight. For instance, the R10 markets itself as using 400+, so these numbers are important.

Can someone quickly straighten me out (or affirm that I've got this right)?

Many thanks.

The LS has 864 channels. The T2 has 216 channels. The LS can only use the same number of sattilites and types of signals that both the base and the rover has (L1, L2, L2c, etc). This is not the same thing as channels. I know others know significantly more about this than I do but the LS devotes a specific amount of channels to listen to things that are outside of the GPS range so it can cancel those noises out. It is not dependent on how many channels the T2 sees. The channels help the LS weed out multipath and interference.

I think Matthew is on the right track....

Here's my redneck explanation:
A channel is like an ear, listening to the sky.
A Satellite is like a VOICE in the sky.
So, if your base is in the field, it will be able to HEAR loud and clear, without alot of channels.
But, if your rover is under a tree, it will utilize MORE EARS to detect the right "Voice". (the right voice, is the one coming in a straight line, not the one bouncing all over, before it gets there).

More "ears" lets it compute out the wrong voices.
