What are they? The pullout ad in the latest POB identifies them, but doesn't elaborate, and I didn't see any info on the website. Are they intended to provide fall protection?

Yes. The new top on the monopod has holes that they fit into. Also good for setting the pole down without laying the receiver in the dirt. You can fit them in any configuration you want.
