With the launch of 60 more of SpaceX's starlink satellites, I have to wonder, in the near future, will a space-based internet satellite system be able to enhance or replace the existing GNSS structure? Sure, at the heart of it all, GNSS satellites are basically atomic clocks, and starlink does not have that capability yet, however even before starlink was launched, this article was published: https://insidegnss.com/space-development-agency-plans-to-create-an-alternative-gps-constellation/ it seems that it could be possible. Once the laser cross-links are established in starlink, it may only take linking an existing GPSIII satellite equipped with a laser crosslink to turn all starlink satellites into a GNSS satellite! Starlink phase 1 is planned to be 1400+ satellites!! I get excited to have 12-14 birds in view, can you imagine having 40-50, 60, more ???
Even without an atomic clock cross linked in, I wonder it one of these internet constellations could be used for navigation?
