Cell and UHF antennas

I packed the LS+ in a backpack for the first time yesterday to the climb the hill from hell. I left the antennas on sticking straight up and put the unit in the padded LS case and put in backpack after connecting with the base. Seema like pretty good protection. My question is can I take antennas off while transporting this way. I was using the cell connection to base, not the UHF. I left the LS+ running while transporting. I know you must always have an antenna connected for a UHF radio. My main concern is even in the padded case, is falling or banging a tree damaging the antenna ports. Any thoughts or experiences? Just my thoughts. The LS is only doing rx, or receiving, via UHF. Thus, it just won't get signal.
It's at the tx end, (transmit) where you want the antenna. So the energy has a vent.
