Coordinate Systems

Gentlemen,

I was reviewing coordinate systems earlier today and ran into a post on Surveyor Connect that I am hoping some of you can clarify.

The original post was made by a PLS concerned about converting between grid, ground and the scale factors.

Adam, Nate and Shawn and possibly Jim F all replied - some multiple times.

The conversation drifted well into the weeds with some of the long time members of that forum (that are apparently respected by the group) having strong opinions about the LS. Their "strong opinions" were seemingly based on a lack of understanding of the processes J-Field utilizes to convert point data between the various coordinate systems.

What I gathered from the discussion was a serious concern by some that applying scale favors, converting/transforming and utilizing DPOS can result in errors.

My understanding is that J-Field can move pony data into and out of an unlimited number of coordinate systems.

I must say that I am biased snd felt like I was supporting my home team when reading the posts however; I would like to dispel any doubt and have this addressed directly.

Anyone care to comment?

This is correct, survey coordinates are permanently stored as WGS84 (ITRF2008) coordinates in the database. J-Field can then display them in any defined coordinate system via the transformation parameters of that coordinate system.

Matt is exactly right. Since the coordinates aren't being converted there is no loss as you display them in other systems. This takes a lot of the pressure off if you store some points in the wrong system.

Hi Joe,

I noticed something interesting. The site I mentioned above is full of arrogant, condescending comments designed to inflate the ego of one side and deflate the other. When I made the original comment, I was thankful that not one person here made a negative comment regarding the offsite conversation. In fact, right after I created the post I realized that I might have made a mistake by injecting that sort of low brow commentary here. The negative comments on the other site were all made by those that aren't members here.

The reality is that those that post here are truly interested in their work and helping other to achieve successful implementation of the technology into practice. I can't recall a single negative comment on the forum. That is remarkable in the current era of posting first and asking questions later.

I will try and find that post and include a link for your those to review that are interested.
