J-Field Build 1.10.3.17463 Problems/annoyances

After using this build for a while, we can't seem to overcome several problems:

-Our USB device/thumb drive is not recognized. Up until this build, we could insert the thumb drive at any time and export a text file for use in other instruments. Now we have to reboot the TR-LS with the thumb drive inserted to have it recognized. Sometimes, even a reboot does not help.

-The static file name for the base station is seemingly random. We have always had our base receivers programmed to log static at power-up. The file name was conventional: Unit#_Date_Session (0131208b).
Now, after running base setup, the first file is closed and a new file is started with a file name that makes no sense. Two sessions today are 6_102838 and 6_142922 ??? J-Field should check to see if the receiver is already logging and leave it alone, if so as happened in all the earlier builds.

-There is no longer a toggle to shut off Verify. We typically locate hundreds of points for a topo survey and many boundary surveys where the points are in open skies with 6 engines fixed. We do not need the Verify algorithm for these points. We have modified the settings to zero consistency level w/o V8 reset to speed up the data collection. But when we encounter a corner pin, control point, or even manhole rim, it was convenient to toggle on Verify with our Control/Boundary settings intact, for that shot. Now, we have to drill in and modify the settings, take the shot, and drill back in to reset the Verify for topo.

J-Field is advancing and improving pretty fast. Maybe there are things I missed?

1) I was able to replicate the problem with the USB drive. I added it to the list of things to be fixed.

2) A new process is currently being developed that will automatically record and submit the base GNSS file to DPOS and correct the survey related points attached to it. There will be major improvements in this area soon.

3) We have discussed being able to store user defined Verify and Collect settings so that they can easily be recalled with just a push of a button. It is on the list of things to do.

Thanks Matt. We always look forward to opening up a new build.

Hi Matt,

After this last update I am unable to turn off the verify screen. This happened one other time after an update. I resolved the problem by setting stop to 10 epoch and turning on verify w/ V6 reset. Next I changed from 10 epoch to "stop with button" and turned off verify w/ v6 reset.

That process isn't working now. Regardless of my settings I get the verify split screen while collecting point data.

Any thoughts?

The new screen with the two plots is always used with when collecting points now. Is there any reason you don't want to see it?

No. In fact, more information is better. The system has been having a tendency to pause during collection. I was thinking that it was resetting (during the verify process) or an error was occurring.

Is it normal when using your criteria for a quick topo and several engines fixed for the system to pause collecting for several seconds? It seems to occur at least half of the time (on a per point basis).

If you have "Verify w/o V6 Reset" selected it will not reset. Are no epochs being collected when you see it pause?

By the way, I second the request to have quick access to preset, user defined verify settings. It would be nice if they were tied to a particular set-up AND could be quickly modified and returned for the same project.

By the way, I second the request to have quick access to preset, user defined verify settings. It would be nice if they were tied to a particular set-up AND could be quickly modified and returned for the same project.

Here is what we have proposed for this:

"Changing between desired settings can actually get time consuming, and the possibility exists for not changing one of the many controls that you intended to change. I would like if we could eventually have a User button, that would pop up a list of measurement configurations which would contain user named settings for different purposes. The user could select the measurement configuration as we currently do, and then save it to a name such as TOPO, OPEN SKY BOUNDARY, WOODED BOUNDARY, CONSTRUCTION etc.

To accommodate this, we could add a button to the Quick Setup Screen near the bottom, slide Level Offset to the left, and place a new button named "Save Measurement Settings" to the right. The "Save Measurement Settings" command could pop up a means to Select, Save and Delete a measurement profile. Additionally, I would like to assign U2 to provide instant access to the Select a Measurement profile command. The artwork for the Select a Measurement profile screen would be nice if rather large buttons were displayed for each named profile that the user created. Something similar to that which is created when the user creates categories for codes. I do not envision that the user would ever need any more "space" than what this type of screen offers."

After reading previous posts, I see that I can create two rover set-ups: RoverV0 with the minimum Verify parameters for topo and RoverV1 with the Verify set for 2 engines fixed, 3 resets, 30 epochs, etc. This gives us our simple toggle functionality of the last build. Also, we do not foresee the need for degrees of verification. The TR-LS labors a little verifying in the woods, but executes very quickly on less stressful points.

And, the Base setup screen gives the option for recording GNSS. The default that I see is ON with the base already running at connection, but if I stop base and toggle RECORD off before re-starting the base, the file that was opened at power-up continues logging with the desired file name intact.

So, my last problem is the USB. I cannot see the USB A port at all now, even after rebooting.

After thinking about this more I think it would be good to have a User Defined button to toggle Verify with Resets on and off. I have requested that this be done.

Steve you may want to try doing a hard reset by holding the On/Off button down until the LS reboots if you haven't tried this yet.

I created 3 new sets ups. One for control, precise and quick topo. It seems to work fine now...thanks for the input.
