RMA Concerns

I received the refurb advanced replacement today, and notice that it has some sloppy glue work around the top and a bit on the sides. Anything to worry about, except for cosmetics?

Also, I didn't find a return label or even return instructions inside the box. Next steps?

What you see is some touch-up paint that is purely cosmetic. That unit appears to have gotten scratched up in the past.

You should have been provided with some shipping instructions that look like the document I have attached and also a RMA #.

Michael arranged for another advanced replacement unit -- one that wasn't banged up -- and it looks great. He set it up with my backup data, but when I turned it on for the first time this morning I found some unfamiliar icons. After power-cycling they went away, but in the photo below, what's the significance of the lock icons and the red GNSS icon? (The red background flashes on an off continuously.) Was this a phone-home situation that required the unit to check for the appropriate authorizations? It seems to be working normally now, though I've only done a rudimentary test.

The red GNSS icon indicates that there is no communication between J-Field and the GNSS board. This can happen occasionally and restarting the unit should resolved it.

This happened again tonight when I booted for the first time this week to load some points. A reboot fixed it, but I'm not encouraged by the pattern. I'll see what happens tomorrow.

Same flashing red SV icon this morning, reboot fixed it and I was able to work. This evening, same thing. I'm thinking that there's something disturbingly wrong with this unit. It *looks* great, but the internal communication problem is concerning, and because a reboot takes so long the workaround is really annoying.

How many DPOS sessions/points does it have on it?

This same thing happened to mine about a month ago. I backed everything up and then did a factory recovery. It is now back to normal and boot up time is normal as well.

I was told it was due to Jfield reading DPOS objects every time it boots. I had one project that had somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 points with raw data that I told it to process.

Whatever the cause, it now seems to be permanent -- the flashing red GNSS icon is present every time it boots, even after a factory recovery. Michael is arranging for a replacement.

Thanks!

FWIW, I've booted 642 pretty much every morning for the last week or so, and the GNSS error icon has been flashing, so I've just put the unit away and not tried to use it. Today I needed to extract a g-file, and I noticed that there was a GNSS firmware update available, so I installed it. When the receiver rebooted the GNSS board icon was normal, and I was able to receive RTN corrections. I'd like to get some RTK work done tomorrow, so I'll give it a try again in the morning, with my fingers crossed.

No joy. When I booted this morning the icon was flashing again. A reboot got rid of the flashing icon, and indicated that it was tracking satellites, but when I tried to collect a point I got nothing -- not a single position click. I guess it's truly hosed.

The replacement for the replacement arrived Saturday and seems to be working as designed. Thanks for expediting the shipment, Michael!
