System Corrupt

I have been having a difficult time with Triumph-LS. It has crashed twice, locked up numerous times, and even received an "Out of Memory". Data collection has been very erratic, jumping from "Stand Alone", "Float" and "Fixed". In an open area I see 6 engines "Fixed", but when I hit "Start" it switches to Stand Alone, the "Float" then "Fixed" alternately. After it finally finishes the accuracy is piss poor.
I have downloaded the Recovery program, but, I cannot get it to run on 3 computers. I purchased a 16gig MicroSD (ScanDisk® Ultra Plus) to install the Recover program on. My 3 computers recognize the card, but, JAVAD'S Recovery installation program won't run. It locks-up on my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Don,

The Recovery Tool may actually have been running while you were running out of patience; believe me, I've been there. The little program that makes your recovery microSD really needs to have a loadmeter / progress bar so the user can see that something is actually happening during the 400MB + download. That's the kicker. The download is usually more time than my patience has allowed for in the past, but anymore when I need to use this tool, I start it, then don't worry about it for 15 to 20 minutes or whatever time it takes.

I'm not certain that the recovery tool is needed yet. Are you running J-Field v1.10.3.16010?

In regards to the recovery tool, my first suggestion would be to try it again; HOWEVER, do yourself a favor if you haven't already done so BEFORE you do the Recovery Tool option, and really consider doing this every time that you come back in from the field:

Get a USB thumb drive; 1GB maybe enough, and save it for just your work done on the LS. Insert it into the (middle) USB port on the right side of the LS.
From Home screen1, tap on Files, Backup and Restore, Backup to USB Stick.

VKB_Data_Backup_20141016-05.47.13.png

Now, anytime you want, you can restore your LS files from the USB thus keeping all of your coordinate systems, setups, maps, data etc. perfectly preserved. This is another thing I've learned the hard way ;)

Rapidly jumping from 'fixed' to 'standalone' is a feature in the first phase of Auto Verify. Page 238 discusses how Auto Verify works. In summary, there are two phases. In phase one, J-Field acquires a number of independent fixed solutions by resetting engines until a certain confidence level is reached. Once the confidence level is reached, then the process moves to phase two. In phase two, each additional epoch is compared to the results of phase one, if it fits within the user defined confidence guard value (which is a 3D radius) from the phase one verified average, then the epoch is added to the solution. If it is not, then it is rejected from the average. If there are more than 30% rejected, the process starts over. There is more to it than this, but to explain your observation of 'switches to Stand Alone, the "Float" then "Fixed" alternately' this is probably why. Turn off verify (or set the confidence level to 0) and this behavior will stop, however, you will not benefit from the software's ability to sniff out bad fixes in difficult environments.

Piss poor accuracy could be related to a few other issues. I'd need more details. I think you are combining some non-related issues here that probably need to be disassembled to find the appropriate solutions.

Thank you all for your advise. It just seems that the length of time and accuracy to get a acceptable reading has been downgraded since the system crashed. What's funny is I would not have known that the system had crashed if it had not popped-up the dialog box stating so ("System Crashed, Technical Support Notified") or something like that.

I was advised, by technical support, to run the Recovery program earlier when I was unable to download an update because an "Out of Memory" popped-up during the download.

I don't really want to run the recovery program if it is not necessary. I am just not comfortable with the way the Triumph-LS has been working lately(Since lock-ups and crashes). I have absolutely no personal data on it, so I am not afraid losing any. Resetting my set-up is no problem. I just hope the recovery program works correctly (if I can get it working).

Kelly - The Recovery Tool installation program has been running for a little over an hour now. I dare not click on the dialog box as it will "stop responding". Right now I just have and hourglass cursor which should mean it is busy, but the HD and/or internet indicators shows very little activity, if any. If I look at the micro SD Card (drive) it is still empty. Normally when a download begins something will populate the drive showing partial download. What do you think?

Yeah, that's way too long and I forgot to mention (thinking you'd see it when it was done downloading), the little popup window that says: "Card preparation done."

The out of memory message during an LS update seems odd assuming that you already have installed the 8GB microSD card that was supposedly included with your purchase - please confirm that you have a storage card in your LS. If not, try the Update process again with a storage card inserted and fully seated.

Regarding the stalled Recovery Tool creation... one idea is to try this from Windows Explorer (FWIW I'm on a Win7 Pro 64-bit machine): click on Computer, click just once to highlight the Removable Disk (H: or whatever your system shows as the microSD card), then right click, then from the popup menu, click on Format...

This shouldn't make any difference, but still is something I'd try doing to the brand new empty card. Then give it another go at using the RecoverySD.exe - Also, choose Release spin when you start the process. The last time I ran it was about 6 weeks ago and it worked as intended.

Which screen is on your unit; resistive or capacitive?

Kelly,
I have already tried everything you have mentioned (format, etc.). The program just won't load (Windows 8.1 & 7, 64bit).

Just now, I have another bug. The upper right battery indicator remains lit (Green) when I shut it down. What next?

That's interesting, my upper right LED remained on and red today. The solution will likely be to update the power board firmware; however, this is still in development and it is unknown (at least to me) when it will be released.

There is still another option that I would try assuming that you're able to connect to the Internet via a LAN cable or WiFi - SIM connection will eat up your data plan if you're on a limited amount of data per month.

Start with Home screen1, Support, Software Update, Settings, Apps Settings and then enable/ check all Force boxes. This will compel a reinstallation of all existing softwares and firmwares. Be sure once this effort has been completed that you uncheck these boxes.

Kelly,

I did what you and Matt suggested and forced an update on all programs. The Board update seems to have fixed the problem with the Battery Indicator lights. Thanks guys!

I still had a problem updating from the GeoData server. It kept cycling through "Interrupt" and "Connect". It finally locked-up and I had to Hard Boot the LS. The second try completed without any flaw. I suggest that any forcing updates on all software do it one at a time, because my GeaData problem appeared to nullify the previous downloads and/or installation (I was updating all of them at the same time). On rebooting I still had Battery Indicator problem, so, I forced an update of the Power Board a second time which solved the problem.

Can you or anyone tell me what the "JBridge" download is to be used for? It is located in the same area as the "Recovery" download on JAVAD's site?

JBridge was/is a temporary solution for importing files into JField. Within days of development, JField was able to directly import dwg/dxf. I'm not sure if it may have any other benefits.
