I once went to visit a 1/4 corner. It was OVER a huge mountain, and hard to get to. We ran a traverse over the mountain. At 420' NORTH of the 1/4 cor, was a creek call in the GLO. The 1/4 cor was about 600' NORTH of the mountain top.
So, I had made a temporary coord, from other info. Then, we used a compass and chain to measure north to the creek. At the creek, we mapped the creek. Came back to the 1/4 cor approx. Searched for every stump hole or witness trees possible. We found ONE stump hole, that matched a rock pile. We had our brushing tools, no monument. We tied about 6-10 nails together, with flagging, added to the rock pile, and got 3 witness trees, standing ones. And, went home.
I later (Much later) tied this "Rock pile and cluster of nails" with GPS. It fit previous measure by some incredible small amount. And, I added a rebar to the mix.
So, I suggest you carry a small hammer, and a few misc things, like a Cotton Picker Spindle, or some nails, etc. IF you look around you, you can MAKE a substantial monument, with a few nails, and witness trees. With modern GNSS being so easy to slap a SPC on this kind of thing, there is really no good reason to loose a monument.
