Trouble importing points

I am having a problem importing a points file (CSV). The file itself appears OK. Importing from Google drive folder using the same procedure I have used previously. The preview page shows point numbers but no N,E,Z,Desc. There are no coordinates associated with the point numbers.

Also, is it possible to import map/field/assumed coordinates without any underlying coordinate system? These are not grid coordinates but are ground coordinates from an existing field survey.

No, it has to be on some kind of system. I usually move the old stuff to "close to grid" I usually create a scale point using a SPC from the county tax site and a rough elevation from Google before ever going to the project. Then I create a local system from that point to import the design points into.

You can also go to the Localization icon. When localization is opened a design coordinate system is automatically created. Import to that system and then do the localization when you get to the field.

Any idea why my points are not importing? I used the NC Grid as the underlying system but the points came in as N=0 E=0 & no description.

It is out of the office at the moment. I deleted the job and re-created it without page1 points so we could go out & collect. Didn't really need field coord's.

Unless I misunderstand, this is something I do all the time for use with localization. I calc a boundary in a 15000,15000 arbitrary system, import this points into a page with no system defined, then create a new system for that page. Switch to a NAD83 page, locate a few monuments, then localize by matching those up with my calc'ed points. It works great!

You use the peculiar little icon shaped like a house with a plus sign inside it. (I've never understood what this is supposed to represent.)

Jim, if you go to the localization screen first the system will be created for you. It saves a few clicks.

Charles, Are you up to date?

Can you elaborate (step-by-step) how to do this? It's not clear to me how the process you're describing works.

Thanks!

Tap the localization icon. It creates a system on the design side for you automatically. Then import points into that system and carry on with the localization.

I have diagnosed the problem I was having importing a points file (CSV). My AutoCad recently blew up and I was forced into re-installing with a slightly newer version. And don’t get me started on installing an old version of AutoCad on a Windows 10 operating system. But I beat down that issue after a few days of head scratching.

The points file problem I found came when I exported the points with the newer AutoCad from the drawing using P,N,E,Z,D format (comma separated). I only saw point numbers and no coordinates after the import. It always worked before my blow up. The LS would not accept that file now for some reason. I then opened the CSV file with Excel and simply re-saved it. Voila, the points imported as expected. Go figure.

There should be 2 files in the ZIP file. The Jtest5.csv is the file that will not load. The Jtest5 (1).csv is the Excel corrected file.

The problem is the extra spaces following the commas. Can you change the export format so that it does not include the spaces?

I will investigate if that is possible. Thanks for helping. I now know what to look for. Looking back at some older CSV files there is no extra space following the comma. I probably would have never noticed that.

You wouldn't happen to have AutoCad's telephone number, would you? I would like to give them a piece of my mind.
