UHF Freq. Error

Have a T1M that is used as a UHF base for a LS (upgraded to a LS+). All 4 constellations are turned on and used. Typically can get a mile range, even into woods, if the base is set up higher than any shot I need and in the clear.

For a couple years the radio will stop with the icon turning 1st yellow then turns red and stays until the lower number advances from 1 to 42 or 43 then that number goes to 80 and the icon turns green with 100 link rate number in the top. Now more frequently it will stay red and never reconnect even if the base is in clear view a few hundred feet away. I can live with the occasional event but when it does not reconnect it becomes an issue, especially if I have just hiked 3000ft. up a mt. to get a couple shots! It does it at any distance not just long ones and at variable intervals or may not at all for several days. I need to go back to the base and bluetooth reconnect to the base download the previous base file then start another session and can usually finish a day without it totally shutting down again, however it may go red and then after 42-43 turn green and I can then continue.

The on (green) and off (red) occurs on most every project sometimes just a few minutes after setting up, so I don’t think it is an overheating issue. If I get out of UHF range and then once I get back into range it will reconnect green and work most of the time.

A couple times I have tapped the icon when red with high numbers, like 812, and get a white screen that says UHF freq. error.

On my office base point, as a test, I set an old T1 as the base and when I checked after 6 hours the LS was still connected. They were about 500 ft. apart

If this needs an RMA for radio replacement, can the radio parts from a T1 be swapped into it? I have an unused T1 that could be used for parts that I kept for a source of replacement batteries and the radio “stick”.

I do not know if you have an external UHF antenna port on that triumph 1 unit or not, but if you do, I'd get an external 1/4 wave antenna on that base. And extend it to over 20 feet. And, get somebody who knows their stuff to carefully check all your setting, before you do a return.
Also, do you have an external antenna on the LS?

External antenna on the LS (after upgrade to a +, its necessary!) and have used a different antenna stick from a T1 on the T1M with no change.
Also the T1M is set up on a tripod and mast that elevates it to 13'.

Duane...I have also had issues with UHF dropping randomly with my ls upgraded to ls+ and t3...very painful for work flow...been a while since I have had that happen....was in a prior thread, but with no ryme or reason as I remember

Ken, good to know someone else has this issue, another area surveyor also has a LS upgraded to a + and a new T3, he mentioned occasional dropping as well.

Why is an external antenna "necessary" on the LS+?? does it not have an internal antenna?

My T-LS+ apparently does not have an internal UHF antenna switch or internal UHF antenna. Switching the software between Internal and External makes no difference to RSSI. If the external antenna is connected, the T-LS+ works just as well with Internal selected as with External. If the external antenna is not connected, the T-LS+ works just as well with External selected as with Internal.

It has an internal antenna. But, external collects more data.

Think of going down in your basement, and listening to an airplane going overhead. You cannot hear as much.
Then, go out in your yard, and listen, where the DIRECT sound can hit your ears. It's louder.
So, external antenna will "hear better", than internal, (in the basement).

Changing from LS to LS+, means that there is ALOT more data to HEAR.

So, being able to hear ALL the data, makes things work better. External antenna helps.
Don't forget to SWITCH, from the HOME screen, hit UHF, TOP of screen, 3rd icon from LEFT. Looks like an old telephone pole, with arms up. Right BELOW the LOCK hardware button. You get another screen. Named UHF. Upper right of this screen says SETTINGS. Hit that. Now, you have UHF settings. Upper right of these 4 buttons, says ANTENNA INPUT. Hit that. Now, you can change that to EXTERNAL or INTERNAL. Then hit APPLY.
This way, the software addresses the correct antenna location.
