2 or 5 Hz Base Transmission

I just saw my HPT435BT stop broadcasting after 17 minutes with 5 Hz corrections after I hooked it up to test it. I'm trying to figure out why now.

The problem appears to be that the radio stops broadcasting and does not resume broadcasting when the call sign is broadcast or should be broadcast (every 15 minutes). If you remove the call sign when setting up the base it works without problems. I'm sure which all modulations or periods cause this problem yet.

It looks like the problem occurs when the correction rate is greater than 1 Hz and a call sign is used after more testing.

P.S. I've noticed that I periodically get a loss of signal when running at 1 Hz. I've always assumed this to be caused by the call sign being broadcast. It normally isn't too annoying, presumably because I'm usually moving between points when the call sign goes out, and that it's only when I happen to be taking a shot at the same time the call sign timer kicks in that it catches my attention. In any case, at 1 Hz the radio resumes sending corrections once the call sign broadcast is done.

FWIW I updated my radio's firmware just now. I don't expect this to fix anything, as I assume that Matt's firmware was already up to date when he uncovered the call sign glitch.

Yes the FCC requires the call sign to be broadcast. I was using the latest firmware (3.2 Rev 02 B13). I'm not sure if the problems is with the radio firmware or Triumph-2 (base station) firmware but have asked Vladimir Zhukov to look into it.

Thank you for reporting this issue.
It was confirmed. Fix will be provided next week. It will be new version of firmware for radio.

Can you point me to some information on updating the 35w radio firmware? I have never done that before.

You'll need ModemVU, available as a download from the main Javad site. Download the instructions, too (I don't remember if they're in the ModemVU zip file or not), and don't ignore the instruction to run ModemVU as Administrator -- I banged my head against that particular wall for about half an hour before finally paying attention.

You'll also need to download the latest firmware (though it sounds like you'll want to wait until they fix the shutoff bug first).

Once you get ModemVU talking to your radio, updating the firmware is pretty straightforward.

Also, it is a bit counter intuitive, but you will need the JAVAD USB drivers, so install them. Then connect your radio with the cable, but don't select the USB option, it is a USB cable but a serial connection, so just check your device manager to make sure what COM port the radio shows up connected to, then just select that COM port, and the computer should connect to the radio.

Fix will be provided next week. It will be new version of firmware for radio.

Because the higher measurement rate looks to be so useful, I'm anxiously awaiting arrival of the new firmware so I can get a feel for what my radio will put up with. Please keep us informed as to any changes in the release schedule.

Thanks!

Make for sure that you have the antenna connected to the radio before you power it up to do the updates in modemvu. I have had the same transmission problems and replaced my deep cycle battery which took care of the stops in transmission. I was running a D31 deep cycle (2 years old) and replaced it with the same.

I thought the danger of running the radio without an antenna connected was due to overheating as a result of the transmitter not having an outlet for the generated RF power. Does the update process engage the transmitter? I did an update without the antenna connected, and didn't notice any heating.

My understanding was that anytime the radio is powered up, that the antenna has to be connected. Therefore, I have always tried to be more safe than sorry. Maybe one of the staff can clarify for us.
