Importing a text file

I had this come up yesterday and couldn't figure out how to do it. I had an existing job with 27 points from the first day and intended on importing design points 28-33 but forgot to before I left the office. Before I realized I hadn't imported I'd started a new base session on point 28 and had collected a few additional points as well. My text file actually contained points 1-33, but all I wanted to import was 28-33 and for the life of me I couldn't find where to only select "part" of a text file. It doesn't hurt to import all but it creates a duplicate "design" point copying my original survey points 7 [1], 8 [1], etc and kind of makes a mess of the points.
I ended up just quickly starting a new job, importing all, then exporting the 6 I needed but this is where I most likely just should've imported all in page 1. I'm hard headed and don't even use the page feature like I should, but IS there a way to select only a portion of a text file to import?
Also, when I went to import the new six point file I created, I'd already used those points and selected "rename". I would've liked to have selected which point it began renaming but it automatically renamed them 28[1], 29[1], etc. I then had to manually go into points and renumber them what I wanted. When we stake out these we type in the number and I'm not sure how I'd do that with those type of numbers.
Long story short, I made this WAY more difficult than I'm sure it was, but it was really cold and I was down in the bottom of a 220' deep ravine and wasn't thinking too clearly o_O
By the way, the Javad preformed amazing in this ravine, some of the most incredible collections we've done yet with it. As I said, we were over 200' below our base going down the thread of a drain collecting breaks. 75% of the shots literally didn't even collect any more than the one bucket. Just plowed right through phase one, onto phase two and then validated with mostly three to five engines!

To skip some points you could have used the Skip Lines feature, although this is mostly just intended to skip header lines. To avoid name conflicts the Prefix or Suffix options could be used.

You can have an old job loaded, 250 points. (design points), do a bunch of field work, (251-300) office work, More design points, (300-320) more field work, back and forth.
Design points, and survey points are co-mingled. Then, after you are THOROUGHLY confused, you can set design points current. Then, hold down the red X, and DELETE all design points.
Then, LOAD the WHOLE file. But, tell it to SKIP all point conflicts. It will fill in everything. Skipping all SURVEY POINTS.
I just LOVE this feature.

Thanks Matt I'll try that. How about the rename feature? Is there not any way to have it come up and ask my " first point I want to start" with renaming so I could pick the next number available in the job and not get the 28[1], number? Is this where you say to use prefix or suffix? Let's say I was importing points 28-33 but they were already in the job and the next available number was 45.

Yes, the Prefix and Suffix options rename the points you are importing. That is currently the only renaming option.

Darren, it's already DONE! This feature is IN THE LS NOW!

Hit the HOME button, until you see the Data Exchange button.
Hit that.
Put your thumb drive into the USB port, on the right side of the LS.
Press Import.
Select USB device.
Press Open, up at the top of the screen, in green letters, The little key with the arrow on it.
Select your ASCII file.
Now, see the button, on the right, where it says Name Prefix, or Name Suffix?
Press that.
Now, add your prefix, or suffix.
I don't see the ability to add or subtract the point numbers, ie, re sequence them, but you can do alot with suffix, and prefix.

This is the kind of thing that makes me so happy with this survey equipment.

Let 'er rip, potato chip!

Nate

OOPS, Matt answered you, while I was typing.

Here is a way now to add multiple old jobs to the LS. Just add a letter to them... And filter by that letter. And you can rot trans, etc, with those groups. Mmm good!
