A couple of suggestions, call the USB something other than Hard Disk; e.g., External Storage, USB Storage, Removable Storage, etc. or maybe that's not on J-Field, but it's a Windows issue in not realizing that there's no disk in a USB thumb drive

Also, please consider adding an option to refresh the Background Maps screen.

Other item; observation: when I did the screen captures, there was the boing sound, each time and then the LS froze. At the time I was testing J-Field alpha v1.10.3.16665 and a crash report has already been sent.

"Mount Network Share" currently also exist in J-Field. It is found in Files, Browse Files and then clicking the folder icon. Michael, one thing I notice is that in file operations, copy and paste commands are missing:

Could copy and paste be added here?

I've put "Copy/Paste" in the todo list, will implement a bit later.

Jim, Global Mapper can do both - it's an awesome affordable tool that should be in every surveyor's kit. You can see a glimpse of both in the two examples I've posted to date; one of the recon project out on Swans Island and the other just a little test down on Cape Elizabeth. The Swans Island project had a fair amount of time spent rectifying the ancient plan (raster) and getting Ed's control, search points, etc. (vector) into the LS. The Cape Elizabeth illustration was quick from the ortho imagery provided through the Maine GeoLibrary and the Maine Office of GIS (raster) plus some NGS control points (vector) as a little garnish

When I get out from under my current writing assignments, this is one area of interest that I want to illustrate and write about next. The giddiness of being able to do all of this very cool stuff still hasn't worn off

Thanks Kelly, I took a look at their site and it appears that it's around $500. I use Autodesk Civil3D, however it doesn't have the capability of exporting .sqlitedb files. It would be very helpful to have a accurate high res background image loaded as my default base map. I'm very seriously considering the purchase.

I'm still stuck on LDD 2004. How does Civil 3D handle native LAS files? If you work with LiDAR data, GM will allow you to do quite a lot with just its base application (no need to buy the add on LiDAR module unless you're heavy LiDAR user). If you buy from Paul Tocknell, the guy that runs the support forum, he discounts your cost while buying it from him also helps keep his support forum paid for. He's showing $404.10 at the moment for a new seat.

Hi Kelly,

I learned on civil 3d, so I didn't need to go through the transition. Occasionally I will get a file where the design was created in LDD. C3d doesn't recognize the objects a native.

A friend teaches CAD, including c3d at the local community college and he does all his design work on LDD. He seems to think that the newer software is difficult to use. I purchased my first copy in 2005 when they were still distributing both versions. I like the software and have no complaints other than the cost and subscription requirements.

Thanks for the info on purchasing from Paul. LiDAR is not an issue for me so it looks like the base package is fine.

Global Mapper is fun to use doing other things than straight up GIS and surveying stuff like the above map of the geoid. If you like, please check out my Geiod Gallery done a couple years ago as part of the article I wrote on Gravity's Increasing Gravitas. Global Mapper made all of these images possible. I have to apologize for the website as it's a total mess since I moved it to a new host last summer and I simply have not had any time to fix it. I'm still on the fence about pulling the plug on it entirely as the work necessary to fix it is daunting with so little time to devote to it anymore... <sigh>

Yes, but there have been lots of advances since GM v13.

Before you buy anything, they'll let you have a trial license I think for a couple of weeks if you want to try it out first, which I would suggest just so you have a better idea of its limitations. The support forum has excellent peer to peer and developer contributions and is an active place.
