Offset screen results

I was using my Triumph-LS in a difficult wooded side hill environment today to mark some lines between corners. Part of the time I was using stakeout mode to stake a line with 2 points. Other times I was getting close to line, then going into Collect mode to just set a nail control point from which to pull an offset (I generally feel more comfortable storing points in this mode because this newbie feels he can better control the point number and description this way).

So after collecting the control nail I would use the Cogo, Offset, To Line 1 routine to evaluate the distance of the nail off of the line. After going through this it was apparent to me that I never got a negative offset value in the offset routine, which surprised me. It is apparently more to create a calculated point on the selected line, from what I can tell.

What am I missing with regard to evaluating the offset of an existing point from a prescribed line? I am used to stations and offsets, with negative numbers being left and positive numbers being right, just like the outputs in the line stake routine.

Thanks.
