What, pray tell, is smart tip?

I just noticed new firmware in the testing branch of J-Field. It's called Smart Tip.

Can anyone describe this feature?

The expected availability is around the end of August right now I think. I don't know the price yet.
$19.95? ;)
I'd heard this was in development but kept wondering "how is a metal detector in the bottom of a metal pole going to work?" Guess this answers that question.
The toughest pins always to find are those right next to steel posts. Wonder how well this will differentiate between the pin and the post, say if they're almost side/side?

I had good results in a test I ran with a 1/2" rebar next to a chain link post, but the rebar was flush with the surface. If it were very deep, it might be difficult to distinguish from the post.

I will likely be missing out on this one too. Oh well. I suspect that it doesn't make economic sense to do this, but would love to have a software plug-in module designed for Carlson that would interface with SurvCE and access the coolest Javad features. I can dream can't I? :)

Very interesting - I have thought about the possibility of a survey supply company incorporating a pin finder into the bottom of a survey rod - with new designs like the HoundDog, http://www.chrisnik.com/hounddog_locator_1.html, it seems like it could be done. Team Javad has already done it, with full integration with the LS! This looks to be awesome! No more shoving the pole in the ground though...

I will be watching this...

Tovio, I appreciate your desire... integration. However, after having the LS for 6 mos now, I can tell you, it is not very likely. I dream of a itty bitty total station UNDER the LS, that does it all for us. (I'm dreaming too!)

I would use this on my Javad telescoping pole and carry it separately. We Could still monitor the L.S. display. My concern is the environmental conditions we find ourselves in, the tip will undoubtedly be immersed in mud, water, dirt, slush, snow etc. etc. It has to stand up in that.

Hate to hijack this thread but...
I look at it this way. Javad is fantastic equipment, but the market share is low in the US. The LS is scary for a company with established equipment, and while having revolutionary features, does have its drawbacks in form factor (for some), TS integration, and software. The T1-M is a better choice for me - and others, but a big established company may not see much difference in that an another flavor, especially with a big inventory of another color. OK, could we increase the market share, and get Javad more mainstream with a bit more conventional equipment, that has more features then other colors? By making a Javad module for Carlson which could access a few of the coolest features, it could open up more market share, then once people are more comfortable with the green - they would be more apt to try or jump to a more non-conventional platform (the LS).
With the Hemisphere GPS partnership not sure Carlson would allow something like that, but they have always played so well with others, I would hate to see that change. The final take on this is yes I want to more cool new features, but I don't want to give up my Carlson Surveyor 2 DC.

Have you used the LS or just seen what it can do on the web? I have and do on a regular basis. I was curious at first but now that I have spent countless hours with the LS. Many of those hours with a permanent grin, a few cussing, but the majority very happy with the little box. I also from time to time go back to my old setup, which is a T1-T1 using carlson. I absolutely hate every second of it. The LS by far is the most superior GPS I have ever used period. Ive only used the T1M for a couple of demo days. One unit ordered was the T1M and one LS. The loser was to be sent back and double by the winner. After about 4 hours we all made up our mind to send the T1M back and order another LS. Not saying it is a bad unit. Its probably the best "base" unit Javad makes. But there is no comparison to the LS at the rover.

I did have a LS here. I prefer the T1M-T1M Carlson solution. I wager it would be MUCH easier to talk the majority of the industry into my setup then the LS- AT THIS TIME. Which is my point, grow the market share now. The LS may be standard in the future. It may be the near future, but I think it will be a bit farther off then that. Give the industry what it wants now, then make them see what they need.

I disagree. T1M-T1M carlson is the industries current setup. No matter what color you get. The LS is the future. I cannot seem to figure out why anyone that would use the LS for a time. And in that time you can visually see the verified checks would want to go back to a single engine with no checks. That is like saying a typewriter is mainstream. It's just what everybody want. The computer is just too far in the future.

Just the other day we sent a .dwg to field guy about an hour away. Office put in the wrong r/w line to be staked. Field guy caught the mistake and called the office. I was on the phone when he called in and I walked them through sending the drawing through RAMS in about 15-20 seconds. And we could have loaded it also with no help from the field but we let him take if from there. Not knocking your current setup but there are many more doors opened with the LS. But hey. Thats just me.

If you are lucky enough to have someone in the office that knows downloading/uploading files then RAMS is the cats meow. After the field guys are done all they have to do is leave the LS on. The office can download all the points that day. Send the base points off to be processed. Adjust rover points. Upload tomorrows points, drawings, or projects. The list is endless. And to be able to field tag points with pictures is a plus. But to be able to take pictures and create points from those pictures is just ridiculous. I mean what is this thing gonna do next?
